Rum, tobacco leaf, cinnamon and saffron — the raw materials behind Initio Side Effect

Initio Side Effect vs Psychedelic Love vs Oud for Greatness

Which One Should You Buy?

Initio’s three most asked about fragrances

Table of Contents

The short answer: Buy Side Effect if you want warm, boozy and spicy — rum, tobacco and cinnamon over vanilla. Buy Psychedelic Love if you want soft, powdery and floral — rose and heliotrope in a hazy almond cloud. Buy Oud for Greatness if you want a genuine oud statement with a startling clean lavender running through it.

They are the three Initio fragrances people ask us about most, and they are frequently confused with one another because two of them share a base and all three share the house’s unmistakable volume. They are not interchangeable. Here is the full comparison, based on wearing all three and on years of talking customers through them at our counter in Vienna.

Side Effect — the house signature

Notes: cinnamon, rum, tobacco, saffron · sandalwood, Hedione

You will love Side Effect if… you like your fragrances warm, sweet and a little decadent — and if the words “rum” and “tobacco” on a note list make you lean in rather than back off.

What it smells like. It opens on dark rum, dusted immediately with cinnamon and saffron. It is boozy without being cheap about it, spicy without being a Christmas candle. Within about twenty minutes it settles onto pipe tobacco and creamy sandalwood, with a distinct vanillic sweetness running underneath, and it stays roughly there for the rest of the evening. Comparisons to hotel bars and cigar rooms come up constantly, and they are fair.

Longevity and projection. Among the strongest performers in the range. Two sprays will carry a full evening; three is more than most rooms want.

When and where to wear it. Dinner, drinks, cold weather, evening. It is heavy for high summer and it is not a meeting fragrance — Side Effect announces itself before you finish sitting down.

One honest caveat. Side Effect is now very widely worn. If part of what you are buying at this price is distinctiveness, be aware that you will smell it on other people. Narcotic Delight — cherry, cognac and peppered vanilla — scratches a similar itch and is far less common.

Psychedelic Love — the soft-focus one

Notes: bergamot, rose, heliotropin, myrrh, vanilla, patchouli, Hedione

You will love Psychedelic Love if… you want something romantic and enveloping rather than sharp, and if powdery, almond-tinged florals appeal to you.

What it smells like. Rose, but blurred. Heliotropin gives it a marzipan-and-face-powder quality that softens every edge, and myrrh and patchouli keep it from floating away entirely. Vanilla underneath ties it to the rest of the Carnal Blends. It is the most tactile fragrance of the three — it feels like something more than it smells like something.

Longevity and projection. Long-lasting but noticeably more contained than Side Effect. It occupies the space around you rather than the room.

When and where to wear it. Evenings, cool weather, situations where you want to be noticed by people standing close to you rather than by everyone at the party.

One honest caveat. Powdery is polarising. Some people read heliotrope as elegant and vintage; others read it as their grandmother’s dressing table. Test this one on skin before committing — it is the fragrance in this trio most likely to be loved or rejected outright.

Oud for Greatness — the statement

Notes: lavender, saffron · oud, agarwood oil, patchouli, nutmeg, musk

You will love Oud for Greatness if… you want real oud presence and you are not looking for a fragrance that blends into a room.

What it smells like. The trick of Oud for Greatness — and it is a genuine trick — is the collision at the top. A raw, slightly animalic oud gets hit with a bright, clean, almost soapy lavender. It should not work. For a great many people it absolutely does: the lavender lifts the oud out of heaviness and makes it wearable in a way that most Western oud compositions are not. Saffron and nutmeg keep the middle warm, patchouli and musk anchor the end.

Longevity and projection. The biggest performer in Initio’s catalogue. One spray is a decision; three is an imposition.

When and where to wear it. Cold weather, evenings, occasions where you want to be remembered. It is not an office fragrance and it is not a summer fragrance.

One honest caveat. That lavender is the whole argument. A meaningful minority of wearers find it reads as detergent against the oud and cannot get past it. If that is you, Oud for Happiness is the fragrance to try instead — same collection, ginger and liquorice in place of the lavender, considerably creamier and sweeter.

Head to head

Side Effect vs Psychedelic Love

This is the comparison we are asked for most, and it comes up constantly in fragrance forums because the two share a house style and a vanilla-Hedione backbone. The difference is temperature and texture.

Side Effect is hot and rough. Cinnamon, rum, tobacco. It has friction. Psychedelic Love is warm and smooth. Rose, heliotrope, powder. It has none.

Both last well, both are evening fragrances, both cost €270. If you tend towards spicy, boozy and gourmand, Side Effect. If you tend towards floral, soft and romantic, Psychedelic Love.

There is one shared thread worth naming: both rest on the same vanilla-and-Hedione base, but it does different work — a warm floor under the rum and tobacco in Side Effect, the soft centre of the whole thing in Psychedelic Love. People who found Side Effect too spicy often get on well with Psychedelic Love for exactly that reason.

Buying both? They are different enough to justify it and similar enough that most people find they reach for one far more than the other. Start with the one that matches your instinct, live with it for a season.

Side Effect vs Oud for Greatness

Not a close call for most people, because they are answering different questions.

Side Effect is a pleasure fragrance: sweet, warm, inviting, easy to like. Oud for Greatness is a presence fragrance: dry, resinous, slightly confrontational, harder to like and more rewarding when you do.

If you own neither and want one bottle that will get compliments, Side Effect converts more reliably and costs €50 less. If you already own several sweet, warm fragrances and want something that does not sound like them, Oud for Greatness.

Oud for Greatness vs Oud for Greatness Neo

Neo, released in 2024, is not a reformulation — it is a reinterpretation. It keeps the oud, the saffron and the lavender (specified as Lavender Orpur®), swaps the original’s patchouli and nutmeg for bergamot, and adds fir balsam, which pushes the whole thing greener, brighter and more aromatic.

Choose the original for the rawer, denser, more animalic reading, and for cold weather. Choose Neo if the original felt too heavy or you want something you could wear in milder weather.

Both are €320. If you are buying your first one, the original is still the reference point.

How Initio compares to other niche houses

We stock most of the houses Initio gets compared with, so we can be straightforward about this.

Initio vs Parfums de Marly. Same founder — Julien Sprecher created Parfums de Marly in 2009 and Initio in 2015 — which is why people sense a family resemblance. De Marly is the more polished and more crowd-pleasing of the two; its bestsellers are built for broad approval. Initio is rougher, darker and more concentrated on a single idea per bottle. If you find de Marly’s Layton or Herod excellent but safe, Initio is the logical next step. Side Effect vs Layton is the specific comparison people ask about: Layton is fresher and more versatile, Side Effect is warmer and more nocturnal.

Initio vs Xerjoff. Xerjoff spans a much wider range of styles and price points, and its house signature reads richer and more polished. Initio is narrower, denser and built around a single dominant idea per bottle. Side Effect vs Xerjoff’s Naxos comes up often: Naxos is honey, lavender and tobacco with a fougère structure; Side Effect is rum, cinnamon and tobacco with a gourmand structure. Naxos is more refined; Side Effect is more immediate.

Initio vs Byredo. Almost opposites. Byredo is minimal, transparent and modern; Initio is dense and maximal. If you like Byredo, you will probably find Initio too loud — except possibly for Musk Therapy or Paragon, which are the two quietest things the house makes.

What about Initio dupes?

We will be direct rather than pretend the question does not exist. There are many “inspired by” versions of Oud for Greatness and Side Effect, and some of them get the opening minutes convincingly close.

What they generally do not reproduce is the middle and the end. The material that makes Oud for Greatness expensive is agarwood oil, and it is expensive because it is genuinely scarce; a €40 bottle is not using it. The result is usually an accurate first ten minutes followed by a rapid collapse into generic sweet woods, along with shorter wear time and a flatter, more one-dimensional development.

Whether that trade is worth it is a real question with a real answer for many people. What we would say is this: decide it after smelling the original on your own skin, not before. That is a different decision from guessing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Initio Side Effect and Psychedelic Love? Side Effect is spicy and boozy — rum, tobacco, cinnamon and saffron over vanilla. Psychedelic Love is floral and powdery — rose and heliotrope over myrrh, patchouli and vanilla. They share a vanilla-Hedione base, which is why they can seem related, but Side Effect is warm and textured while Psychedelic Love is soft and blurred.

Which Initio fragrance should I buy first? For versatility, Musk Therapy. For warmth and compliments, Side Effect. For a statement, Oud for Greatness. Our full ranking is in Bestes Initio Parfum 2026.

Is Oud for Greatness worth €320? It is the most expensive line Initio makes because it uses agarwood oil. Whether it is worth it depends on whether you want a real oud fragrance — there are few Western compositions that deliver oud this convincingly at any price. See Why Is Initio So Expensive?

How long does Side Effect last? It is one of the longest-lasting fragrances in the range — a full evening from two sprays is typical, and it is often still detectable the next morning on clothing. Exact hours vary considerably with skin type, so treat any specific number you read online with caution.

Is Side Effect for men or women? It is unisex. In practice it is bought more often by men in Austria, but there is nothing in the composition that makes it masculine — the rum-tobacco-vanilla accord reads warm rather than gendered.

Which Initio is best for summer? None of these three. Rehab, Atomic Rose or High Frequency are the better warm-weather choices; the Carnal Blends and the ouds are heavy in heat.

Are Initio fragrances Extrait de Parfum? Only The Hedonist Collection — Musk Therapy, Rehab, Paragon, Power Self and Lift Me Up. Everything else, including all three fragrances compared here, is Eau de Parfum. Several large retailers list this incorrectly.

Where can I try Initio fragrances in person? At our boutique in Vienna. We carry every Initio collection for testing on skin, with no obligation. Details: Initio Parfums Privés in Wien kaufen und testen.

Try all three before you choose

Every argument above is a starting point, not a verdict. These three fragrances behave differently on different skin, and the one that reads as obviously best on a paper blotter is very often not the one you still want at the end of the day.

If you are in Vienna, come and settle it properly. We are at Seilergasse 3, 1010 Wien, two minutes from Stephansplatz, and we will put all three on you and let you walk around the first district for an hour. If you are elsewhere in Austria, Germany or the EU, write to us and describe what you already wear — we would rather talk you into the right bottle than sell you the popular one.
